DESIGNING MOVEMENT: An Aesthetic Investigation of Motion in Product Design

Here, I applied my abstract sketching techniques to another real product: a wall sconce. Each block in this model represents a separate light source. I animated the blocks to come off the wall in different directions to create a dynamic spatial arrangement that would light a room in an interesting way. What is unique in this sketch is that each element is controlled individually, almost like the limbs of a puppet. In fact, various mechanical concepts were stolen directly from “rod puppets" in order to achieve sufficient range of motion and control. This allowed me to vary the paths through space and relative pacing of the blocks to create several different kinetic sketches from one model. This puppet style of sketch model would be used in conjunction with video to attain an accurate record of each kinetic idea.
